An unknown and lethal virus has wiped out five billion people in 1996. Only 1% of the population has survived by the year 2035, and is forced to live underground. A convict (James Cole) reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to 1996 to gather information about the origin of the epidemic (who he's told was spread by a mysterious "Army of the Twelve Monkeys") and locate the virus before it mutates so that scientists can study it. Unfortunately Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990, six years earlier than expected, and is arrested and locked up in a mental institution, where he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly, a psychiatrist, and Jeffrey Goines, the insane son of a famous scientist and virus expert .

Movie Parental Guide

nudity 2/10 Cole's rear end is seen twice, but both times it is when he is being washed down in a shower so it is non sexual. Jeffrey pulls down his trousers and reveals his butt, and runs around. This isn't sexual either it's played for laughs. No sexual content at all basically, just a bit of nudity that happens only in the first half hour of the film. If a kid has seen there own butt before, they should be fine for the nudity.
violence 7/10 A man punches Kathryn in the face (we see her bloody nose in a few scenes). Cole tackles a man and beats him with a phone. Cole's mouth bleeds profusely in one scene. Viewers will see why in the movie. Goines begins a fight at the psychiatric clinic. It is not intense, nor is there any blood. A particularly intense World War I battle is shown. Explosions and gunshots are heard. A man falls to the ground facing the camera, his face covered in blood. Another man gets shot and he is shown in a stretcher, covered in blood. Another man gets shot in the leg.
profanity 6/10 15 F-words and numerous other scattered profanities, use of bastard, shit, goddamn.
alcohol 1/10 Cole is on medication when he's in the psychiatric clinic. Several shots or sedatives are given to him throughout the film.
frightening 8/10 Intense. The main theme of the film, a virus that is going to wipe out the population of the Earth, makes it very intense. Brad Pitt's character is mentally ill. He does some hilarious things, which can lighten the mood of the story, but all in all, his character is disturbing to watch. As the film progresses it gets more intense and eerie in each scene. The climax is amazingly intense. The ending that follows is very sad. 23/50 Overall: Twelve Monkeys contains moderate violence, an intense atmosphere, infrequent swearing and brief rear end nudity. This movie should be ok for mature 12 year olds and up, but younger viewers (11 to 12 year olds) should be supervised by a parent. While this movie can be intense or unsettling, there is lots of funny characters that lightens the mood. The only reason it is R is because it had too many F-Words for a PG-13.
