Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940's, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red, the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity The film contains several sexual references, but they only occur in the first third or so of the movie. Most of these references are to rape. -- 15 A narration implies that rape is an ongoing occurrence for Andy. One scene involves the same men who usually terrorize him punching and kicking him against the ground and one moderately describes how he will put his penis in Andy's mouth to which Andy replies in a graphic manner why they shouldn't do that. -- 15 (references are not crude or explicit) A scene that takes place in a prison shower where men are naked, but there is no visible full frontal nudity though few men's bare butts are seen briefly. -- U/PG A poster of a rather scantily woman is shown briefly (the poster of One Million Years B.C). -- U In the film's beginning, a man's murdered wife is seen "in bed" with another man, having an apparent affair (only their bare shoulders are visible, but both characters are moaning, kissing and making obvious facial expressions). -- 15 (sex is only established) A man narrating the story briefly mentions smuggling in "packs of playing cards with naked ladies on 'em" into the prison, although the cards themselves are never shown on-screen or brought up again. -- U While a man is in isolation, the prison warden tells him that if he ever tells anyone about the corruption in the jail, he'll "send him to the sodomites downstairs, and he'll feel like he'd been f*cked by a train". -- 15 Sex/Nudity as a whole -- 15
violence A man is shot in the chest four times. Bloody bullet wounds are briefly seen. He then lies in a pool of blood with the bullet wounds on his back. -- 15 (strong) A man shoots himself in the head. The camera cuts away right before, and blood sprays onto the glass behind him. We then see him with a blood trail on his neck and a blood splatter on the floor below him for 2-3 seconds. -- 15 (no injury detail) A man hits two others in the face with a film roll. He is then punched twice in the chest and once across the jaw (a dot of blood on his mouth). Shortly after, he is kicked four times in the stomach and hit across the face twice (seen from a distance). We then hear he spent a month in the infirmary. -- 15 A man is hit with a baton five times and kicked once. He tries to crawl away, but is dragged offscreen and the beating briefly continues. He is then seen injured and bruised in a wheelchair for a few seconds and we hear he spent the rest of his life in a hospital. -- 15 (much is off-screen and justified by context) A man tries to fend off a few people in a fight and is beaten offscreen. It's also implied that he was raped. He then walks with a couple of bruises briefly on his face. Depressing and upsetting. -- 12/15 A man is beaten by a prison guard, with 12 blows landing. Upsetting, although no blood or injuries are visible due to the dark lighting and some of the blows are offscreen. We later hear that he died. -- 15 (strong, but important in the film's context) One man holds a knife to another man's throat, a tiny wound is seen on his neck. -- 12/15 A man is willfully hanged. We see his feet jerk for a second or two. His body is then seen from behind for a few seconds. -- 15 (upsetting, but justified by context, no imitable detail) Violence as a whole -- 15
profanity Coarse language: Infrequent (2 uses of "motherfucker") -- 15 Strong language: Frequent (27 uses of "fuck"(3 in a sexual context)) -- 15 Moderate language: 3 uses of "prick" -- 12 3 uses of "dick" -- 12 2 uses of "bastard" -- PG/12 1 use of "cock" -- 12 Mild language: 42 uses of "shit" (including 6 of "bullshit", 2 of "shit head" and 2 of "horse shit") -- PG/12 18 uses of "ass" -- PG/12 2 uses of "Jesus" -- PG 1 use of "Jesus Christ" -- PG 1 use of "Sweet Jesus" -- PG 1 use of "What the Christ?" -- PG 1 use of "Swear by God and sonny Jesus" -- PG 1 use of "tit" -- PG/12 1 use of "bitch" -- PG/12 Very mild language: 13 uses of "damn" -- PG 12 uses of "goddam" -- PG 9 uses of "hell" -- PG 3 uses of "son-of-a-bitch" -- PG 3 uses of "God" -- U/PG 1 use of "Oh, my Holy God" -- U/PG 1 use of "For God's sake" -- U/PG Language/Manners as a whole -- 15
alcohol People drink beer on a rooftop in one particular scene. -- U One man is drunk and he holds a whiskey bottle in his hands. -- PG People smoke in several scenes. -- U Prisoners deal cigarettes secretly among the bedsheets. -- U Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking as a whole -- PG
frightening The movie has a rather depressing tone throughout, but the ending is so uplifting that it makes up for it. There are moments of moderate threat when characters are threatened (normally by guards). -- 12 There is brief sexual threat when a man is seen being cornered and chased before implied sexual violence -- 15 Threat as a whole -- 15 MPAA/USA - Rated R for language and prison violence. BBFC/UK - Rated 15 (strong language, violence, sexual threat).
