nudity People kiss, and a man and a woman showing her back hold each other and kiss. A shirtless man and his wife talk, and then kiss on the bed. She lays back and he lays on top of her, they kiss and moan, the scene then rapidly ends but sex is implied. A man and his wife are shown to have a child. A man has an affair with a woman who is not his wife, and this leads to arguments. We are told many times that the man and woman sleep together, and in one scene we see them post-coitus in bed. She is obviously nude but covered by bed sheets, and he is clothed. We don't see anything, and we see them kiss and talk. A woman wears scantily clad outfits. We see lots of cleavage on her breasts and most of her legs, with majority of her buttocks can be seen.
violence The violence in this movie may be considered morbid and disturbing. Some blood is shown. A man has two fingers cut off with a chisel. We see the bloody and bruised digits later. A man shoots a man in the chest, the man gasps and slumps to the ground dead. We see some blood on his shirt. A woman hangs herself (we see her feet swinging off the ground). A man has a noose placed around his neck, a hatch opens beneath his feet, and we hear a crack. A bird gets crushed (quietly). We see its bloody and mutilated body later. At another point, a bird is smashed again. The camera cuts away just in time, but we see a blood splatter. A woman's fingers break by getting caught in some mechanism. Some blood shown, but this scene ends very rapidly. The woman's screaming, though, might be disturbing to certain viewers. A man shoots another man's hand, taking off two fingers (we briefly see the bloody digits). A man falls through stairs and into a box where he is trapped, the box is nailed shut and then buried underground (the man in the box shoots through it and strikes a man on the outside in the arm). However the man is soon dug up and rescued. A man is held by police with a nightstick across his throat, and he thrashes and struggles to get away. A man shoots another man in the chest. (This is a different scene than the one previously mentioned). There is a small and very brief spurt of blood. This is extremely hard to catch and the camera cuts as soon as it happens.
profanity 1 scatological term, 1 anatomical term, 4 mild obscenities, name-calling (fool, stupid), 4 religious exclamations. bloody is used a lot. Bastard is used a few times
alcohol Men are shown drinking alcohol in a pub, people drink alcohol in several scenes, and people drink champagne in a celebratory scene. Two magicians stick messages to each other onto the bottom of glasses of beer. One man is described as being perpetually drunk and is shown comically stumbling around and slurring his words. Later, a man notices that something is upsetting his wife when she starts drinking more often at home.
frightening The finger-removals are intense and realistic, despite their brevity. A man falls into a water tank that locks (he struggles to get out but cannot) and a man tries to break the glass but cannot before the man drowns (we see the dead man on an autopsy table, his eyes are open and his body is pale). We see bits of this scene multiple times. A woman is lowered into a tank of water, the lid of the tank is locked, she is unable to get out and she thrashes and struggles. It is later implied that this has happened several times. There's a scene where one of the main characters is hanged. We see him drop and hear his neck break, but the camera cuts in that same instant. A room full of men drowned in tanks of water is shown. This movie is very grim, serious and intense.
