violence As per the film genre, the main characters engage frequently in hand to hand combat. Po and his friends fight primarily empty handed, while the villains often use weapons. Some characters are presumably 'killed' in the movie, most explicitly concerning a villain's henchman is stabbed when he refused to fire on his own troop. To thwart a prophecy, Shen leads a genocide of giant pandas.
profanity None
alcohol None
frightening Spoilers ahead: Throughout the film, Po goes on a personal journey to discover where he came from, after seeing a flashback of his mother from a red symbol. After Po finally finds inner peace, he learns that the village he was born in was attacked by Shen's forces. Before they could kill Po, his mom runs off with him into a forest. She then puts Po in a raddish crate and lures Shen's forces away, before Shen brutally kills her. Unlike in Bambi and its scene of the title character losing his mother, Po is eventually able to confront his mother's murderer and deliver justice. This secondary plot may be intense and emotional to younger children, especially adopted children. This is the saddest scene in the movie, and it made the audience cry.
